Microdermabrasion for Acne Scars

Acne will develop on the skin when pores are blocked by a build-up of sebum – a substance that helps to get rid of dead skin cells by bringing them to the surface of the skin via follicles. When the acne subsides, it may leave behind a scar that will take a long time to fade. Another sure fire way to make acne worse is to burst the pimples, which will spread the infection and leave a further trail of unsightly scars behind.

Microdermabrasion has been labelled as an swift facelift by some, and is usually a more helpful alternative to more invasive procedures that can often be costlier as well. It makes use of tiny grains which are rough to exfoliate the surface of the skin. This aids in the removal of dead skin cells and reveals a fresh layer of skin underneath. It does not affect the deeper skin layers as it may be harmful and there is the risk of the tiny grains becoming embedded.

Using a specialised tool, tiny crystal grains will be aimed at the treatment area outlined during the consultation. These grains will exfoliate the skin, which helps to scrape off dead skin cells on the surface. As this method is less aggressive than traditional dermabrasion, no anaesthetic is required as the treatment is not painful.

Regular sessions of microdermabrasion may even be able to “train” your skin to grow newer cells at a faster rate, bringing the healthy skin cells to the surface more quickly than usual. This may also result in a decrease in your skin’s deeper blemishes over time, meaning your skin will appear more youthful.

Your skin will be reddish or pink after the treatment, but you may resume your regular activities after the procedure. You will experience a sensation similar to that of mild sunburn for the next 24 hours and it is recommended that you use moisturiser and avoid putting on any make-up during this period of time. Try to avoid exposure to the sun as well for the next few days and be sure to regularly use moisturiser to hydrate your dry skin.

Your doctor may recommend a specific number of treatments for optimum results, and will continually advise and guide you about ways to keep your skin fresh. Each treatment will be spaced apart at different time intervals, depending on the condition of your skin. You should notice your skin becoming more radiant and healthy looking after each subsequent session.
