Kenacort (triamcinolone acetonic) injections are commonly utilised to treat keloids. It is a safe method that does not cause much pain as a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) is mixed into the injection in order to numb the skin. Keloids are pathological scars presenting as nodular firm lesions that extend beyond the area of injury.
Several sessions, approximately 3-4, are needed in order to flatten the keloid, although this may vary depending on the keloid size, how well you react to the treatment or even genetics. The keloid injection helps keloid to shrink and reduce in size. The first injection tends to relieve symptoms and make the keloid feel softer. Keloid injection is a safe procedure. However, it may give a mild discomfort during the procedure as it involves an injection.
Other than reducing the size and improve the appearance of the keloids itself, Triamcinolone injections help to:
As a result of injury to the tissue, scars tend to form as part of the natural repair process of the body. When this process does not go to plan, unsightly scars will form. The formation of keloids is due to the excessive production of collagen by the skin in response to injury and is arranged haphazardly into various shapes and forms. Keloids can sometimes be itchy and pain where it may cause discomfort to the patients. Triamcinolone will be injected directly into a keloid to break the bonds between collagen fibers, which reduces the amount of scar tissue beneath the skin.
Patients may experience thinning or sunken skin at the site of injection which may subside after a few hours.
It may cause some redness, scabbing or swelling of the skin but this is a minor side effect and should subside within a few days of treatment.
There is no downtime related to keloid scar removal. Patients can immediately resume their daily activities once the injection is done. Gently massaging the scar may help in breaking up scar tissue and improve the effectiveness of the injections.
