Restoring Hair Volume With Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant

Why FUE Hair Transplant?

FUE is a hair loss treatment that is ideal for patients in their early stages of baldness. Since it can be done in small sessions with small punches that can heal quite fast without any scalpels or stitches used, it requires less downtime. it is perfect for those who do not want to disrupt much of their normal schedule. The pain after undergoing FUE is also minimal, so much so that you usually won’t require pain medication after the operation, although patients will still be given medication to relieve the pain. The procedure can also give you a natural-looking hairline and thicker-looking hair with no “plugs” in sight. The scars made during the FUE procedure are virtually invisible because they are very small, round punches the surgeon makes on the back of your head. They would end up looking like small dot-shaped scars that can be easily concealed.

The FUE has an increased technological advantage in the form of the use of the ARTAS system. ARTAS is a robot that assesses each unit before performing hair extraction. While still manipulated by a surgeon and/or technician, ARTAS is a huge leap forward in hair transplant procedures, making the procedure more efficient than manual extraction. With ARTAS in play, FUE lowers its risk of complications for the patients.

How FUE Hair Transplant Works

Unlike the hair transplant techniques before it, FUE takes advantage of recent technological advances to implement individual graft extraction as part of hair transplant procedure in Kuala Lumpur. Hair grafts are extracted via one of two possible ways.

The two-step process involves first, placing a punch on top of the follicular unit, then second, forceps being used to smoothly pry the unit from the area.
The other option, the three-step process, also involves punch installation over the follicular unit as its first step, but instead of using forceps immediately in the second step, the punch’s blunt end is utilized to twist the unit free from the area. In the third step, forceps are still used to extract the unit. While the three-step process is more accurate, it also increases the possibility of graft burying and requires more time for the procedure to be completed.

The implantation that comes afterwards can be done either through pre-made incisions, wherein the extracted follicular units will be safely kept in saline solution to keep them alive while the incisions are made on the recipient area. Afterward, the units will then be implanted individually into the incisions.

The other implantation option is to stick and place the follicular units into the implant location, which can be executed in two ways. First, an implanter pen loaded with the follicular units will be placed over the target area, pushed into it, creating an incision in the process and implanting the units at the same time. The second method requires the use of a blade or needle to make the incision in the implant area before the unit is implanted right away.

Premier Clinic performs FUE Hair Transplant

What to Expect

While FUE Hair Transplant is a technologically advanced procedure, its efficacy may vary depending on your hair type, original and intended hair thickness. It’s highly recommended that you consult an FUE expert first to assess if you are a good fit for the operation, and if it’s possible to attain the look that you’re aiming for.

To prepare for the surgery, take Vitamin C to strengthen your immune system, stop smoking, even temporarily, and heed the doctor if you will be prescribed an antibiotic to prevent possible infections post-op. You also need to tell your doctor about your current medications or supplements, especially since you’ll have to stop taking aspirin or other blood thinners. Refrain from eating or drinking at midnight and wash your hair without using any hair product at all.

After undergoing FUE, you need to be aware of a few side effects, including slight numbness, wide scar, edema, itching, and some bleeding. However, its benefits outweigh these risks, especially if you have tried several other hair loss treatments without getting results.

1. Is the procedure painful?

Patients will not feel pain throughout this hair removal process. A sedative is given at the beginning of the procedure followed by periodic subcutaneous local anesthetic consisting of lidocaine, bupivacaine. You may expect to experience mild discomfort, itching or swelling after the procedure but it will resolve after several days. We provide patients with pain medication after their procedure.

2. Does this procedure has side effects?

You can expect small wounds immediately after the procedure in the area where the hair was removed. But worry not, FUE Hair Transplants will not leave a scar. The method of individually removing the hair allows them to be harvested without leaving a liner scalp scar.

Because of the transplant, there will be redness on your scalp but it can easily go away with help of warm shower.

3. Is there a long downtime?

There are no downtime associated with this treatment. You may go on your daily routines as usual. However, please avoid touching your scalp or going for a swim as it will increase the risk of infections.

4. When can I start to see results?

After about 3-5 days, the wounds will close and the resulting small scabs will resolve after the first week. Most patients managed to get their desired hair pattern within 12 weeks. The result are permanent and look completely natural.

5. How long do the result last?

The result of this treatment is permanent.

6. What should I do/ don’t do after the procedure?

Following the procedure, patients are told to wash their hair twice a day for the first 4 day after the transplant. Be careful with using shampoo as a strong one would disrupt the healing process. Using Rogaine shampoo is highly recommended.
Besides that, patients are required to sleep in a semi-sitting position in order to minimize swelling and need to avoid direct sunlight on the scalp for the next 6 month.

Please avoid swimming (VERY IMPORTANT) to avoid any infections. Bear in mind that your scalp is quite vulnerable during the whole treatment duration. Therefore, please do not rub or apply unnecessary pressure on your scalp to allow the follicle to grow naturally.

7. How long does the procedure take?

For most patients, only one session is required to complete the hair transplant. However, this depends on your specific hair condition and also if you are suitable for the procedure. This process depends on the amount of patient’s hair transplant. The transfer will take approximately 4-6 hours. Additional hair transplant sessions may be required if you continue to lose hair or you want thicker hair.

8. Is there any food restrictions after the procedure?

There is no food restrictions for the procedure. You may enjoy your All-You-Can-Eat buffet as usual!

9. What’s the entire process like, from the start of getting an appointment till the end of procedure?

The process starts with a FREE consultation session with our expert doctor. During the consultation, our doctor will examine your health record and your scalp condition to determine if you’re a fit candidate to go for FUE Hair transplant treatment. If you’re having total hair loss, other treatments might suit you better.

Then, the doctor will carefully extract hair follicle from one area of your scalp where we flag as the ‘donor area’. The strands of hair are slowly plucked out one by one and being re-inserted into the target area.
