Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment for Acne Scars

Many people who have acne scars feel its negative effects down to their mental and emotional health. Studies have shown that those who suffer from this skin condition are at risk of developing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, low quality of life, poor self-image, and feeling lonely. Typical causes of acne include bacteria, excess oil production, hair follicles clogged by dead skin cells and oil, and excessive hormonal activity. Acne may get worse due to certain medications, hormones, stress, and diet.

Severe acne may clear up with proper treatment but it will leave scars. These scars, though, can be managed through effective acne scar treatment such as fractional CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser. This method targets only the scarred part of your skin, leaving the healthy, clear skin untouched. Premier Clinic is bringing you the fractional CO2 laser treatment for Malaysians so we can all benefit from it.

Why Fractional CO2 Laser

Fractional CO2 laser is preferred by those who suffer from acne for a few solid reasons. First, it does not only remove acne scars and other scars. It also reduces the signs of aging on the skin, including age spots, crow’s feet, age spots, and smoker’s lines.

Second, this laser treatment for acne scars comes only with a very mild discomfort, especially when a topical cream is applied on the skin before the procedure starts.

Third, this treatment works even on darker skin types, including Asian skin.

Fourth, the downtime is not that long, requiring only about four days. This meant that you will not have to take off as much time from your regular schedule after getting the procedure.

How Fractional CO2 Laser Works

During the procedure, a pattern of CO2 laser beams will create small, strategically-placed microscopic holes below the surface of your skin to generate new, healthy collagen and stimulate the healing of the acne scars. Collagen keeps the skin youthful and healthy. Fractional CO2 laser treatment works because its laser energy only affects a part of the skin instead of its entire surface, speeding up the recovery process.

What to Expect

The fractional CO2 laser treatment is performed using topical anesthesia. A topical numbing cream is applied to your skin an hour before the treatment starts. Throughout the procedure, you will stay awake and feel a slight discomfort.

A typical session only lasts around an hour, during which you will feel a peeling sensation and a slight sunburned feeling. This feeling is expected to last for four to five days.

Patients can get customized fractional CO2 laser treatment. They can get deeper treatments, but it would mean more downtime, around seven to 10 days, or shallower treatments, which would require less recovery time of around three to five days. But the deeper the treatment, the better the expected results are. Some patients, though, prefer to have two shallower treatments to avoid a longer downtime after each treatment.

After the treatment, you may notice your acne scars, age spots, wrinkles, crow’s feet, or other skin conditions becoming less noticeable. The skin will continue to clear over time. Results will start to show about a week after the treatment and will continue to show improvements within six months after the CO2 fractional laser was first used. In most cases, patients only require a single treatment if it can clear around 30 to 70% of the acne scars.

Getting a fractional CO2 laser treatment is more expensive than your usual over-the-counter treatments. However, it is a worthy investment that pays for itself over time in the form of clear, vibrant, healthy skin.
