Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. Chinese New Year 2024 will be celebrated on Saturday, February 10th. 

In 2024, the Year of the Dragon, rabbits from the Year of the Rabbit in 2023 will “run” into their holes, bidding farewell to their current astrological cycle. Dragon is considered to be a symbol of good fortune and power.

1. Wear red, not white.

White symbolizes death in Asian culture so wearing white is a no-no. The Chinese will normally “pantang” if one wears white, especially on the first day of Chinese New Year. Try to wear a new outfit, just not a white one! The brighter, the redder, the better!

2. Don’t forget the ‘hong bao’!

Known in Mandarin as hong bao, red envelopes containing money are often given from elders to children or unwed young adults. Avoid giving amounts ending in four as the word for “four” sounds much like the word for “death” in Mandarin.

3. Tis’ the season of ‘eating to your heart’s content’!

Some of the things you should eat during New Year’s: Dumplings, noodles, fish and fruit like oranges, tangelos and pomelos. Here’s why some foods are associated with luck and good fortune for Chinese New Year.

• Dumplings symbolize wealth and prosperity as they look like ancient Chinese ingots/money.
• Noodles symbolize longevity and strands should be eaten whole and not bit in half or cut.
• Fish symbolizes a surplus of wealth and prosperity and should be the last savoury dish served with a few pieces left to ensure a surplus of wealth and prosperity in the coming year.

4. Time for families to be together
