Excimer UVB therapy is a new treatment in Premier Clinic which is a very popular skin laser treatment in Malaysia. It is a type of light therapy that can be utilised to address the issues of psoriasis, vitiligo, autoimmune diseases and fungal infections. It works by reducing skin inflammation and slowing down the production of skin cells.
As a new offshoot of narrowband UVB, Excimer light therapy is an improvement on a treatment that used to deliver laser beams at wavelengths of about 311-312nm, used for psoriasis treatment and vitiligo treatment. The Excimer laser will be delivered using a handheld device, which ensures that the healthy skin surrounding the target area of lesions will not be exposed or affected, unlike regular narrowband UVB. As a result, a higher level of radiation can also be delivered, allowing for treatment to be completed quicker in fewer sessions.
At about 308nm, the wavelength of the Excimer laser light therapy will help to effectively address the outlined target area during vitiligo treatment or psoriasis disease treatment. Furthermore, the power density can also be tweaked accordingly, giving the doctor’s more room to modify the treatment depending on the patient’s condition. The excimer 308 laser procedure will also ensure that the healthy skin around the target treatment area will also be protected and not subject to any harm.
Another benefit of UVB light therapy is that it can help to normalise cellular activities that are being changed pathologically. As a result, the Excimer laser can be used to address other conditions aside from psoriasis and vitiligo, including autoimmune diseases treatment and fungal infection treatment. This demonstrates the remarkable versatility of the Excimer laser light therapy, which is why it is one of the most popular choices of treatment for patients with various skin problems.
Vitiligo is a disease in which the pigment cells of the skin, skin fading, melanocytes, are destroyed in certain areas. It may affect several different areas of the body and can be focal and localized in appearance. Vitiligo may happen due to the genetic component that runs in families or medical conditions like thyroid dysfunction.
Vitiligo is not painful and does not cause any harm to the person that has it. However, it may affect the emotional and psychological consequences. UVB excimer therapy is a vitiligo laser treatment that works by shrinking the size of existing light patches of skin and may prevent new patches from developing.
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the rapid build-up of skin cells. Skin cells grow deep in the skin and rapidly rise to the surface, which causes scaling. Psoriatic scales usually appear in whitish-silver and develop in thick, red patches. Sometimes, these patches will crack and bleed. It may develop anywhere in hands, feet, neck, scalp and face. The UVB shorter wavelength will reach the upper levels of the skin and helps to sow down the excess growth of skin cells. This treatment does not cure psoriasis disease, but it can help in reducing the size, itchiness and appearance of plaques or scales.
Patients may experience a stinging or itching sensation during the procedure, but will immediately subside right after UVB therapy. The appearance of mild sunburn may happen. It is usually not serious and can be resolved by changing the UV dosage.
Patients who take medications or supplements that make their skin more sensitive to UV radiation should not undergo light therapy. Moreover, pregnant women, lupus patients and individual with a history of skin cancers are advised to avoid light therapy.
This will be one of the topics discussed during the initial consultation session, as follow-up sessions or estimation of results will vary from person to person. You should also note that there is a possibility of some minor side effects as a result of UVB light therapy, but your doctor will discuss this with you during the consultation.
Repeated, excessive and long-term exposure to light therapy can increase a person’s risk of skin cancer. Due to the potential for a risk of cancer, patients undergoing extensive light therapy treatment should have their skin examined regularly by a medical doctor.
Once the Excimer laser UVB light treatment is completed, you can resume your daily activities or go back to work immediately as there is no recovery period required. Any results obtained with UVB light therapy should last for at least three months but this could be longer depending on your condition.
A treatment of UVB therapy typically costs anywhere around RM 300 to RM 500 per session. Moreover, narrowband UVB therapy has become an established therapy for patients with skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo and others which need phototherapy. With the recognition and establishment, the price may vary depending on the premise you visit, the severity of your skin diseases as well as doctor expertise in handling skin disease cases.
For each treatment of UVB therapy in Premier Clinic will cost about RM 300 for each palm-size of the treated area. Any skin disease treatment will need a compulsory consultation with our skin specialist before we prescribed or administered the patients with any kind of procedure.
LIGHT THERAPY or UVB TREATMENT can be very useful and helpful for people who have moderate to severe autoimmune diseases. However, this treatment does not cure the disease. It’s only able to control their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
