Subcision Skin Resurfacing

This is a minor surgical technique that is utilized in order to treat depressions and dimples that come about as a result of acne scarring on the face. This acne scar treatment can be performed on all skin types, and usually helps to visibly improve the depth of these depressions and dimples, making your skin look better and more youthful.

Local anesthesia will be applied to your skin which helps to render the procedure painless, after which a small needle will be inserted into the skin. Our doctors will use the needle to break up bands of fibrous tissue which hold the skin down. This fibrous tissue is the cause of depressions, dimples and scarring and breaking it up will allow the skin to heal properly, as well as generating new cells to fill in the gaps made.

Subcision works by creating wounds in an effort to break scar tissue and trigger collagen regrowth. It penetrates deeper into the dermis to reach deeper dermal scars, which creates larger channels within the scar tissue. This acne scar removal will need a blunt cannula needle that appears to be a safe method with high efficacy in treatment. The sharp edge of the cannula needle is used to break fibrotic strands that are tethering the scar to the underlying tissue. Once the fibrotic strands are released, new collagen production will trigger wound healing leaving a smoother, clearer and balanced skin tone.

Acne Scars

Acne scarring is a direct result of the presence of acne and can often be determined by inflamed skin which can appear swollen or red. It can also appear after the acne has cleared or when an individual picks or squeezes the pimples, which can further inflame the skin and worsen the condition.

A naturally occurring substance known as collagen will be produced which is needed for the skin to repair itself. If the body produces too little or too much collagen, depressed or raised acne scars will form respectively. Subcision will break down the skin that is depressed and tethered down beneath your skin. The wound caused by subcision will trigger fresh collagen production to heal and improve skin scarring. The new skin tissue will become smoother, flatter and healthier.

Patients may experience minor discomfort throughout this pimple scar removal. A local anesthetic will be infiltrated and numbing cream will be applied at the targeted area to ease the pain during the procedure.

Side effects may include bruising and minor pigmentation in the treatment area, which will subside anywhere between 2 to 10 days. Some risks and complications may occur but rarely happen like hematoma and tenderness at the treated sites. The needle will be removed and squeezed circumferentially around the exit point to prevent large hematoma formation due to bleeding. After the procedure, compression bandages are applied and patients are usually able to drive home unaided.

There is some downtime associated with this treatment, and patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities for 48 hours following subcision treatment. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics as a precaution or preventive measure.

The results are permanent and are usually noticeable after 2-3 treatments, but this may vary from patient to patient. During the consultation, your doctor will determine an appropriate number of treatment sessions in order to get the best results possible. Treatment may also be combined with Dermaroller, Fractional CO2 laser or PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for optimum results – do consult your doctor to find out which treatments work best for you.

The cost for subcision procedure can range anywhere from RM 700 to RM RM 4,800 per session. The total cost may vary from one individual to individual depending on the area being treated, the number of sessions needed as well as the severity and complexity of your skin scarring.
