q-Switch Nd: YAG Laser for Melasma

laser treatment for Malasma

WHAT CAUSES MELASMA?

Melasma occurs when melanocytes are stimulated, melanin is produced in large quantities which groups together in patches on the skin, often times on the face. Women are more at risk of developing melasma, with men only accounting for 10% of all affected individuals. Triggers that have been identified include overexposure to the sun, hormonal changes and selected beauty products that cause skin irritation.

Pregnant women are also prone to contracting melasma, also referred to as a pregnancy mask. There is an increase in hormones that trigger melanocytes in the second and third trimesters, but it is believed that high levels of progesterone causes melasma as opposed to oestrogen – a view backed by clinical studies.

HOW LASER WORKS TO TREAT MELASMA?

Helping to get rid of undesirable skin cells, the q-Switch Nd:YAG laser targets affected areas with high energy light. This removes the top layer of skin and allows for a new layer to grow over it. As the laser is able to penetrate deep into the skin without injuring the top layer, it can stimulate the skin to produce fresh collagen and essential proteins; these natural ingredients are vital for the skin to repair itself.

Relatively painless and quick, this laser treatment is suitable for all types of skin and helps to lighten your skin tone. It also improves the complexion of your skin which will appear much fairer and smoother after treatment.

This treatment may not be suitable if:

  • You have been prescribed Roaccutane in the last 6 months
  • The treatment area is infected or has dermatitis
  • Pregnant
  • You have experienced abnormal wound healing or keloid scarring
  • You are using light sensitising medication
  • Prone to seizures triggered by light

LASER POST-TREATMENT

You can resume your daily activities immediately following treatment as no downtime is required. No swelling, scarring or bruising will occur and there are no major side effects associated with this procedure. You may some experience some mild skin redness but this should subside within half an hour.

Results will improve noticeably after several months, and continue to improve after each subsequent session. A typical treatment cycle consists of 6 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart, but this varies from individual to individual and is dependent on their overall skin condition.
