Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping of the nose to achieve the desired nose.

The procedure can involve the use of various materials, including silicone and ear cartilage. The general steps involved during the procedure are as follows:

1. Anesthesia: Patients are given general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation to ensure their comfort during the procedure.
2. Incisions: The surgeon makes incisions inside the nose or across the narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils, called the columella.
3. Reshaping the nose: The surgeon then sculpts the bone and cartilage of the nose to achieve the desired shape. They may reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip, straighten a crooked nose, narrow the nostrils, or improve the angle between the nose and the upper lip.
4. Augmentation: If your new nose needs a small amount of additional cartilage, your doctor may remove some from your ear or use silicone if you want a more significant change in the appearance of your nose, such as give the tip more shape
5. Closing the incisions: The incisions are then closed with sutures or surgical glue.

Rhinoplasty can affect the area around your eyes, and you might have temporary numbness, bleeding, swelling, or discoloration around your eyelids for a few weeks. In rare cases, this can last for three months, and slight swelling could persist even longer. You can apply cold compresses or ice packs to decrease discoloration and swelling.

After surgery, your doctor may place a plastic or metal splint on your nose. The splint will help your nose retain its new shape while it heals. 

You might get headaches, your face will feel puffy, and your doctor might prescribe pain medication.

Your doctor may tell you to follow the following for a few weeks after your surgery:

• Avoid running, swimming and other strenuous physical activities
• Don’t blow your nose
• Sneeze and cough with your mouth open
• Laughing, smiling, or other facial expressions that require lots of movement
• Brush your teeth gently to keep your upper lip from moving
• Don’t rest eyeglasses or sunglasses on your nose
