While Blepharoplasty in upper eyelids mostly focuses making the eyes look bright and alert by correcting drooping of the upper lid skin, Blepharoplasty in lower eyelid on the other hand, focuses to remove eye bags and dark circles below the eyes which can make one look tired and worn out. Many people in Malaysia seek treatment after receiving comments from friends that they look tired all the time despite physically they do not feel so.
To date, lower lid blepharoplasty, or eye bag removal, is a surgical procedure that has been proven to be the most effective procedure among many to remove baggy eyelids and dark circles, compared to other non-surgical options.
Eye bags are the lower eyelid fatty pads that are seen as the lower eyelids age. As we age and lose facial volume the cheek bone shrinks, eye bags appear as small puffy looking fat bulges under lower eyelids.
Lower lid surgery is typically done to address eye bags and for improving the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes. The incision can be made on the inside of your lower eyelid (transconjunctival incision) or directly underneath your lash line (subciliary incision).
During the procedure that may be performed under general or local anesthesia and this can be done within one hour, your surgeon will make an incision along the lower lash lines before removing any excess fat (known as eye bags) and stretching the skin to ensure a smooth finish. Once the incision has been stitched, any excess skin will be removed, giving out the effect of making dark circles disappear and giving the face a rejuvenated look.
Since eyebags alter facial appearance and make you look older, people interpret the eyebags as a sign of old age, which is very concerning for many people. Many people go for eye bag surgery to help address issues relating to:
Your surgeon may advise you that you should avoid applying makeup for the first seven days after eye bag removal and avoid using contact lenses for around two to three weeks. Low impact exercise during recovery is generally a good idea, but high impact sports should be avoided for at least the first month. You should also avoid any medications or supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, cranberry extract, etc.) that might increase bleeding.
You will be able to go home very quickly after eye bag removal surgery. Any side effects should be of short duration. For example, it is likely that you will experience bruising, blurred vision, swelling or watery eyes, sensitivity to light, but this will eventually subside over the following week or two. The application of cold compresses can help with this.
To help reduce the swelling, patients can apply ice to the eye area a few times a day, for 3-4 minutes, for the first 48 hours. Patients may also be encouraged to sleep in an elevated position, with several pillows to also help minimise swelling. Strenuous activities such as running, carrying heavy things, and swimming must be avoided for the first 7 days, but patients should remain mobile and do some gentle walking.

Lack of sleep does not cause eye bags. It can cause puffy eyes due to the lack of lymphatic which is often mistaken for eyebags.
Yes, eye bags are permanent and they gradually get bigger and more prominent with age.
The differences are that fillers can’t treat more prominent eye bags, and results only last about a year until the filler is needed again, whereas surgery is the only way to get rid of eye bags permanently.
