Buccal fat is the fat between your cheekbones and jaw bones that help make up the shape of your face. Everyone has buccal fat, but some people have more than others. Some people may feel the roundness in their cheeks creates a fullness to their face they don’t like. Having a cheek reduction can alleviate the sense of fullness or “chubbiness” of your cheeks.
Buccal fat removal, sometimes referred to as a cheek reduction, is a type of plastic surgery to remove a grape-size piece of buccal-fat pad tissue from each side of the face in order to reduce the appearance of cheek puffiness.
Buccal fat removal is just what it says on the label: the removal of fat from the buccal fat pad, a mass of tissue located deep within the cheek.
Typically, the procedure takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete and as it is performed on an outpatient basis, you can leave the clinic on the same day.
Although a face that is naturally soft and filled out is considered youthful, some people find that their face feels too full, even chubby. Some of the common cosmetic concerns that can be addressed through buccal fat removal include:
Some practitioners with little experience have had difficulties with these procedures; it is imperative that you seek treatment from a well-established medical clinic with a long track record to keep yourself safe. For people who wish to undergo buccal fat removal, ideally, they need to be at a healthy and stable weight. Smoking puts you at a higher risk of complications both during and after the procedure, so it is best to avoid smoking for at least 2 weeks before and after the procedure.
It is normal for the patient to experience some pain, bruising, swelling, and difficulty chewing after the procedure and these usually last for a few days or even a week. Thus, most patients are advised to take a few days off from work to facilitate a safe and uncomplicated recovery period.
You will not need to clear your schedule for very long after buccal fat removal. Most patients can return to their normal activities after three days.
The main thing to keep in mind with recovery is that you may need to eat soft foods for the first few days. Other things that you need to follow include avoiding alcohol and no strenuous exercise for the first 2 weeks.

Buccal fat removal is considered a long-term solution to reducing excess fullness in your cheeks. Once the fat is reduced or removed from your face, it does not come back. However, you should keep in mind that buccal fat may increase with future weight gain.
Many patients have no visible bruising during recovery. Since the incision is made inside of the cheek, you won’t have any visible incisions or scarring during and after the healing process.
Buccal fat removal may slightly alter the appearance of your dimples, but should not remove them entirely.
