Alarplasty (Nostril Reduction)

Your nose defines the balance of your face. The perfect nose is straight, has a fine round tip and nostrils that are the ideal size in comparison to the rest of it. However, not everyone is lucky enough to have such a nose, especially those whose nostrils are fleshy and wide, which is very common in ethnicities like Asians, Africans and Caucasians. The solution may be Alarplasty, a surgical procedure for reshaping and reducing the size of the nostrils.

The aim is to decrease the alar (the base) of the nose to create harmony and balance between the tip and the base of the nose.

Alarplasty can be done as a standalone, however, if you are considering rhinoplasty, you can also discuss with your surgeon to combine it with a nose augmentation procedure to enhance your overall appearance.

1. Consultation: Your doctor will first discuss with you about your expectation and desired outcome and perform examination and measurement of the face and nose to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. 
2. Anesthesia: Patients are given general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation to ensure their comfort during the procedure. 
3. Incisions: The surgeon makes incisions on the outside of the area where the nostril connects to the cheek. The incision will proceed along the pre-operative markings to the inside of the nose to remove the extra tissue (wedge) of the nose at the alar base.
4. Suture: The surgeon will then use sutures to reattach the nostril to the base of the nose for a narrower appearance. The procedure will be performed on both sides of the nose to achieve a balanced and symmetrical result. 
5. Closing the incisions: The incisions are then closed with sutures or surgical glue.

The entire process usually takes approximately an hour to complete, and hospitalisation is not required.

If you are specifically unhappy with your nostrils, you should consider Alarplasty over general reshaping surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty. Alarplasty is a less extreme surgical procedure and does not require as much recovery as major surgery.

This is because such consumables may increase bleeding and prolonged swelling. 

Side effects may occur even in the hands of an expert. Although good results are usually achievable, some potential side effects may occur, for example, bruising and swelling. However, they should completely disappear within 72 hours, and the scarring will gradually fade away.
