Microdermabrasion for Pigmentation

microdermabrasion for pigmentation

WHAT CAUSES PIGMENTATION?

Your skin is triggered into producing melanin when exposed to the sun – this is a substance that offers protection against the harmful UV rays. However, pigmentation can occur when the skin produces too much melanin which is concentrated in a single area, forming dark, visible patches. Although pigmentation is not dangerous, it may appear unsightly to some. It can also be caused by acne, hormonal changes, skin inflammation, constantly picking at your skin, or even some antibiotics / medicine.

HOW MICRODERMABRASION WORKS

Labelled in some quarters as a swift facelift, microdermabrasion is generally more effective than other procedures which may also be more invasive and expensive. Utilising tiny crystal grains, these rough up the skin to exfoliate the surface, helping to remove dead skin cells to reveal a new layer of skin underneath. It also does not affect the lower skin layers as there is the risk of the tiny grains getting stuck in the skin.

Your doctor will utilise a special tool to aim the tiny grains at the treatment area; this area will have been previously outlined during the initial consultation. Scrubbing the skin, the grains help to get rid of the dead skin cells. This method is not as aggressive as traditional dermabrasion, which means no anaesthetic will be needed during the procedure.

It is believed that the process of microdermabrasion may help to trigger your skin to produce new, healthy skin cells more efficiently. This brings the new layer of skin to the surface more quickly than before, which may also bring about a decrease in the deeper skin blemishes over time.

MICRODERMABRASION POST-TREATMENT

Skin will be pink or reddish following the treatment, but you may resume your daily routine without worry. For the next 24 hours, you may experience a similar sensation to mild sunburn and it is advised that you do not put on any make-up during this time. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure for the next few days, and regularly use moisturiser to hydrate your skin.

Depending on your skin condition and desired results, your doctor will recommend a number of sessions for optimum results, as well as guide and advise you on how to keep your skin fresh. You should notice an improvement in your skin’s appearance after each treatment.
